Rica Gudiño creates digital and spiritual art based in so-called Toronto in Treaty 13 territory. They are a queer autistic white person of Mexican-Canadian ancestry and Mexikha descent working as a metaphysician, designer, and performance artist.
Rica was born and raised in Kensington Market and inherited creative practices from their father and grandfather who passed on the art of storytelling. As someone with mixed European and Indigenous ancestry, they honour all of their ancestral traditions through the ritual of performance and visual storytelling. Originally working with found materials and paints to collage, now Rica creates digital collage and has integrated robotics to make cybersacred installations. They have a BFA in Graphic Design from OCADU and their design work focuses on exploring the depth of symbol and meaning with a focus on intuitive consultation and inspired representation. They have worked for other artists to create visual identities for creative practices and commissioned artwork for businesses.
Rica’s creative and spiritual practices exist in the same space as both inform one another. As a working bruja and metaphysician, they have inherited sacred traditions from both Indigenous and settler ancestors. The practices passed down to them are Curandería, Brujería, and folk Catholicism and each practice is deeply rooted in generational healing. They have experience with cartomancy since 2014, and started their professional reading practice in 2020 just before the pandemic. In the past, they have worked as a spiritual advisor and facilitator for artist collectives and teams to support them through project creation phases. This work has included moon cycle readings, guided group meditations, and guided performance channeling. Please see the mirror reading offering to learn more about their spiritual practice.
